Astronomical Imaging and Adaptive Optics

 초록:

Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) had been developing and operating ground- and space-based observational instruments for diverse scientific purposes, such as imaging, photometry, spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, etc. Most astronomical instruments require imaging technology. Astronomical Imaging is a multidisciplinary technology of the entire process from obtaining an image to displaying information, including methods, optics, detector, analog-to-digital converter, processing, analysis, visualization, etc. Especially, in astronomy, Adaptive Optics (AO) is used to improve the performance of astronomical imaging instruments by reducing the effect of incoming wave-front distortion caused by atmospheric turbulence. Although diverse imaging technologies are applied when developing an astronomical instrument, we are particularly focusing on an imaging camera and an adaptive optics controller. They were developed as a platform to be reusable in astronomical imaging systems. The imaging camera is compatible with different CCD/CMOS sensors and recoverable against Single Event Error from high-energy ionizing particles and protons. And the scalable AO control was developed by optimizing both data parallelism and task parallelism, and it was designed to extend the performance of AO by extending the processor hardware. The technology developed in the form of a platform can be used for new applications with minimal customization, and we can ensure high reliability because it is verified and improved in various applications. The platforms that we developed are planned to be used for various science missions in KASI, NASA, and ESA, and also extended to the application for medical, semiconductor, and military purposes. In this talk, we will briefly introduce astronomical imaging technology and adaptive optics in astronomy and space science, and introduce the imaging camera platform and the scalable adaptive optics of KASI.
